A wheat pillow may sound like some sort of fancy bedding for your next main dish, but they are in fact a non-edible use for wheat. In fact, prior to the innovation of memory foam, buckwheat was an excellent source of pillow stuffing that would conform to the curves of your body or neck. Today, a wheat or buckwheat pillow can still perform the same function as a memory foam pillow, and at a fraction of the cost. Memory foam is often touted as space age technology; it is certainly priced like it. This is due to the highly complex manufacturing process that it requires. By comparison, growing wheat is an ancient and simple process: plant the wheat, tend the field, reap the harvest. A buckwheat or wheat pillow is actually stuffed with the hulls, rather than the kernels of wheat themselves. This has the added advantage of making use of a portion of the harvest that was once thrown away. The hulls should be dry roasted to kill off allergens and provide a sterile stuffing material; the manufacturer's information is the best place to check for this information. Comments 0 |
